We would know nothing about the rich Maya mural paintings if it would not have been for the discovery of a mural complex in 1945

It is now called Paint Temple in Bonampak. Recently restored, brilliant images unseen for centuries are coming alive.  In one scene Maya women on a throne prepare to pierce their tongues .   The piercing was an honor and a responsibility the Mayas were proud of.

The three halls of the temple are covered with paintings.  On one, dignitaries wait for the  king-governor, who appears dressing himself.  Musicians and dancers are on other panels.

In a third room, a battle in the jungle, followed by a victory celebration is painted  Other scenes show all types of  celebrations. The site can be reached by tours of the Mayan areas, by bus or plane.
